Original handcrafted wood furniture.

Our rural modern designs are inspired by the timeworn architectural elements and primitive constructions found in and around the old houses, camps and barns of rural Maine reimagined in a unique modern style. Our furniture is artful and functional and affordable.

Shutter Designs

The Shutter Frame is styled after old Maine camp wood window shutters that were simply 2 vertical boards attached to 2 horizontal battens. After many years of exposure to the elements and the steady pull of gravity these shutter constructions might take on new asymmetrical shapes. And these new shapes would become more interesting than the original rectangular forms.

Crate Designs

Years ago most products were shipped in wooden crates. Simple and strong wooden boxes for transit and storage. These old boxes are now mostly relegated to floor displays in antique and second hand shops. We’ve reimagined these old simple boxes in a new rural modern style for upscale storage. We still call it a Crate and it’s the same as the originals but different. In a Rural Modern way.

Tomato Frame Designs

When you grow tomatoes you need frames to place over the plants to support the fruit as it matures. In years past you couldn’t just drive to the farm store to buy manufactured frames. You had to make the frames yourself. And you would use any material at hand like wood scraps and maybe even some tree branches. The constructions were free form so the tomato patch might take on the appearance of a contemporary sculpture garden. We capture the spirit of these old handmade frames in our Tomato Frame table designs.

Nesting Box Designs

My grandfather raised chickens when I was little. They had the run of the barn and my grandfather made nesting boxes for the hens to lay their eggs by nailing wide board scraps to the inside of the barn wall. The constructions were rough but the hens liked them and it kept the eggs up off the floor. My memories of those boxes are the inspiration for the Nesting Box cabinets.

Lattice Designs

Old Maine camps were built on posts. And one might want to fill in the space between the posts with something that would keep out the critters but still allow for some ventilation under the frame. Lattice was a solution. Thin narrow strips of pine tacked together in a horizontal and vertical grid was a common configuration. It was functional and attractive but not so durable. After many years of exposure to the elements the grid might start to fall apart and the resulting new random grid patterns are the inspiration for our Lattice designs.
