My name is Brian Haddock. And I am the designer and builder for Rural Modern Furniture. My designs are drawn from visual memories of my experiences growing up on an old farm in rural Maine combined with my life long interest in architecture and craft and contemporary design. My craft resume includes work in architectural design, house carpentry, historic preservation, architectural millwork, cabinet work and furniture making.

I work in a small shop in Freeport, Maine and strive to produce original furniture that’s more than just a copy of another maker’s ideas. My ideas are my own. The furniture is all crafted using select grade Eastern White Pine which has been utilized by New England carpenters and cabinetmakers since the 17th century so I’m a party to a long tradition. The furniture is solid timber. No remanufactured wood materials are used. And no nails. No staples. The furniture stains and sealers I use are all non-toxic water based products and the stains are custom formulated in the shop. The joinery is basic and strong. Functional with no frills. The furniture will last a good long time.

The shop is not a manufactory. I build the furniture one piece at a time so I have the flexibility to add custom pieces to my schedule and I welcome those opportunities. I’m doing work that I enjoy and I hope that my furniture will bring enjoyment to you as well.
